Washington | Tony Abbott says Donald Trump has restored America’s belief in itself after the self-doubt of the Obama era even if he’s not a free-marketeer in the way that Ronald Reagan was.
In a wide-ranging speech to the Heritage Foundation in Washington on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT), Mr Abbott also defended Scott Morrison’s handling of the bushfires, saying he doesn’t believe the infernos are evidence that climate change is real.
“I’m not one of those people who sees the current bushfires as confirmation of all we feared,” Mr Abbott said. “It’s something we’re always going to be prone to.”
Mr Abbott also told his US audience that it was “more than possible” for Australia to maintain its intimate strategic relationship with the US as well as a trading relationship with China.
“There are some things that China and Australia are always going to disagree about as long as China remains a communist autocracy and Australia a liberal democracy,” he said.
