- Microsoft has revealed how the Xbox Series X is going to look like.
- The boring design that is akin to a PC tower could give Sony’s PS5 an upper hand.
- Twitter is flush with jokes about the appearance of the Xbox Series X.
Microsoft has taken the wraps off its next-generation gaming console, and you will probably not like what you see. The company has given the gaming device a nice name – the Xbox Series X – but it may not turn any heads in your living room like Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) might.
Microsoft throws aesthetics out of the window with the Xbox Series X
The Microsoft Xbox Series X doesn’t look like a typical gaming console. The trailer gives us a brief glimpse of the device and it looks more like a PC.
It looks like Microsoft’s designers were not much interested in how the device should appear, so they moved aesthetics down the priority list. This is evident from a Microsoft blog post announcing that the Xbox Series X will hit the stores for holiday 2020. Phil Spencer, the head of the Xbox division, wrote:
Its industrial design enables us to deliver four times the processing power of Xbox One X in the most quiet and efficient way, something that is critically important in delivering truly immersive gameplay. We also designed Xbox Series X to support both vertical and horizontal orientation. It’s bold and unique, very much like our fans around the world and the team of collaborators and innovators who built it.
These words make it evident that Microsoft has put functionality over form with the Xbox Series X. But Twitter doesn’t seem to be impressed with the console’s appearance, and the device has quickly turned into a butt of memes and jokes.
The Sony PS5 could have an upper hand
Looks are definitely subjective. So users might not treat the boring design of the Xbox Series X as a dealbreaker when it goes on sale next year, especially considering the specs it is packing. Several Twitter users were happy with what Microsoft is offering with the Xbox Series X.
But one shouldn’t forget that Sony’s upcoming PS5 console won’t be a laggard in terms of specs either. And at the same time, the PlayStation 5 is expected to look a lot more attractive than the Xbox Series X.
A render of the PS5 created by Lets Go Digital is close to what the actual device might look like. A PlayStation 5 insider has already confirmed that the render is the foundation of the actual design. What’s more, another render of the PS5 reveals that the controllers of the device might carry touchscreens.
Of course, one should take these renders with a pinch of salt as Sony hasn’t revealed the official PlayStation 5 just yet. But if the device is close to what the leaks suggest and packs impressive power that rivals the Series X, then the latter will lose out on the style front.
Having a snazzy and futuristic-looking console in your drawing room will definitely give you brownie points and bragging rights, and the Sony PS5 could do just that. The Xbox, on the other hand, will end up standing as no more than just a boring PC tower that does its job.
